1. Introduction
The Professor Yadu Nath Khanal Lecture Series is a flagship event of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized annually since its launch in 2022. The Lecture Series is a tribute to the pioneering legacy and enduring intellectual contributions of Professor Yadu Nath Khanal. Professor Khanal was a distinguished diplomat, scholar, writer and thinker.
He served twice as Foreign Secretary and as Nepal's Ambassador to India, China and the United States. At a defining moment in Nepal's diplomatic history, he provided the intellectual foundation for the country's foreign policy and played a pivotal role in building a professional foreign service. His visions and insights on Nepal's foreign policy and diplomacy continue to offer timeless guidance in an increasingly complex global landscape.
2. Significance of the Yadu Nath Khanal Lecture Series
Through this Lecture Series, the Ministry seeks to carry forward his legacy, bringing together distinguished scholars and practitioners from Nepal and abroad to reflect on the evolving global landscape and its implications for Nepal's national interest.
3. A Preview of all Editions
- • First Edition (7 June 2022, Kathmandu): Prof. Surya Nath Subedi delivered a lecture on "Foreign Policy of Nepal: Past, Present and Future."
- • Second Edition (25 June 2023, Kathmandu): Former Foreign Secretary and Ambassador Madhu Raman Acharya spoke on "Safeguarding Nepal's National Interests: Foreign Policy Choices in the Changing International Environment."
- • Third Edition (14 May 2024, Kathmandu): Dr. C. Raja Mohan addressed "Nepal–India: Prospects and Pathways."
- • Fourth Edition (12 June 2025, Kathmandu): Focused on "Nepal–China Relations in the Context of South Asia: Opportunities, Challenges and the Road Ahead," with two distinguished speakers: Prof. Dr. Jaya Raj Acharya and Dr. Yang Chenxi.
- • Fifth Edition (29 June 2026, Kathmandu): Former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai spoke on "Foreign Policy of Nepal: Navigating Geopolitical and Geoeconomic Trends"
Each edition has progressively broadened the scope of the series, covering Nepal's bilateral and regional priorities within the larger global context.
The Sixth Edition of the Lecture Series will be held in 2026/27.
