Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Shisir Khanal assumed office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal on 27 March 2026. He is an elected Member of the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament of Nepal, representing Kathmandu-6.
He previously held the portfolio of Minister for Education, Science and Technology in 2023. Elected to the House of Representatives for the term 2022–2025, he also served as a Member of the International Relations and Tourism Committee of the Federal Parliament and as a Member of the Parliamentary Investigation Special Committee on Misuse of Cooperative Savings.
Mr. Khanal co-founded Teach for Nepal, serving as its Chief Executive Officer from 2012 to 2019. At the international level, he served as Executive Director of Sarvodaya USA (2005–2013) and as an Honorary Associate at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (2017–2019). He also served as the Education Advisor to the Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City, Dang (2019-2022).
Mr. Khanal has authored and co-authored several articles published in international journals and national newspapers. His contributions to leadership and social impact have been recognised through several awards, including, Forward Under 40 (2012) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Alumni Association, the Distinguished Alumni Award 2017 from the University of Bridgeport, and the Young CEO of the Year Nepal (2019).
Mr. Shisir Khanal is the Head of the Foreign Relations Department and a Central Secretariat Member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party.
Mr. Khanal holds a master’s degree in International Public Affairs from the Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs, University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA, and a Bachelor of Arts in International Political Economy and Diplomacy from the University of Bridgeport, USA.
Honourable Minister Mr. Shisir Khanal is married and has one child.
