Cultural Diplomacy
Cultural Diplomacy
Recognising culture as an important pillar of foreign policy and international engagement, Nepal attaches high importance to cultural diplomacy as a means of fostering mutual understanding, strengthening friendship among nations, promoting cultural exchange, showcasing Nepal’s soft-power assets, and projecting the country’s unique identity and values abroad.
Nepal’s rich cultural heritage as reflected in its diverse ethnic communities, languages, festivals, music, dance, architecture, literature, traditional knowledge, craftsmanship, ancient civilisation and living heritage, together with its remarkable natural beauty, provides a strong foundation for advancing cultural diplomacy. Drawing upon these assets, cultural diplomacy serves as an effective instrument for enhancing Nepal’s soft power, strengthening people-to-people connections, and contributing to international goodwill, understanding and cooperation.
The Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was established in 2024 to promote Nepal’s natural, cultural, historical and civilisational heritage at the international level. The Cultural Diplomacy Section within the Division advances Nepal’s soft power by promoting Nepali arts, literature, language, traditions, festivals and heritage, as well as the country’s enduring values of peace, tolerance and hospitality, in coordination with relevant agencies, institutions, stakeholders and individuals.
The Division implements a range of public and cultural diplomacy initiatives, including cultural exchanges, international partnerships, research and policy engagement, exhibitions, performances, publications, branding and narratives, media engagement, digital outreach and content creation programmes aimed at enhancing Nepal’s international image and outreach. The Section also manages the official X handle, @MOFANEPAL_PD, dedicated to showcasing Nepal’s diverse cultural and civilisational heritage.
The Section further seeks to integrate cultural diplomacy into Nepal’s broader foreign policy objectives by promoting mutual understanding, strengthening international goodwill, enhancing Nepal’s national identity abroad, and contributing to constructive engagement with the global community.
