Hon. Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat met with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, H.E. Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein at the Palais des Nations in Geneva this afternoon and exchanged views on human rights situation in Nepal. Discussions were held on the implementation of the new federal constitution to ensure human rights and fundamental freedom in an inclusive manner.

The High Commissioner expressed his views that addressing the rights of the indigenous people, minorities and traditionally disadvantaged groups would ensure more inclusive enjoyment of rights by the people. He also expressed hope that Nepal could set good model in transitional justice. He showed his willingness to strengthen relations between OHCHR and Nepal by enhancing constructive engagement.

The Minister shared how Nepal was committed to the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms of all the citizens with equality, equity and justice under the wide framework of the constitution. The Minister also noted the dynamic nature of the constitution and its capability to address any legitimate concerns of stakeholders. He emphasized on holding democratic elections in all three tiers of the Government and informed that elections to the local level bodies were slated in May this year.

Similarly, in continuation of his bilateral engagements, Hon. Minister had a meeting with H.E. Mr. Kairat Abdrakhmanov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan this morning during which promoting common interests in international fora, including the Human Rights Council, and potential cooperation between the two countries were discussed. The Ministers discussed issues faced by both landlocked countries, and stressed on the importance of working together to face common challenges.

Members of the Nepali delegation, including the Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN in Geneva H.E. Mr. Deepak Dhital accompanied Hon’ble Minister at these meetings.
