Brief Biography of Hon'ble Mrs. Sahana Pradhan
Minister for Foreign Affairs

Born: 1932, Asan Tole, Kathmandu, Nepal
Father: Shanker Lal Pradhan
Mother: Rambha Devi Pradhan
Husband: Late Puspa Lal Shrestha
Children: Two children (one son, one daughter)


Education:
Attended secondary level schooling in Myanmar (Burma). My father brought our family back to Nepal in 1944 during World War II. Education for girls was a social taboo in Nepal at that time. Doors were open only after civil and fundamental rights movement in 1947 in which I myself took part.

1964 - 1973 Lecturer in Padma Kanya College, Tribhuvan University
1973 - 1975 Lecturer in Tribhuvan University


Political Career and Responsibility:
  • Kept in police custody for 16 days in connection of political reason in 1947
  • Joined Communist Party of Nepal in 1951
  • Kept in police custody in 1952
  • General Secretary of Nepal Women's Organization
  • Executive member of youth and student federation
  • Zonal member of Communist party of Nepal in 1953
  • Politburo member of Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist) in 1978
  • Spent 5 months in jail in connection of "Satyagraha" in 1985
  • Spent 2 months in jail in connection of "Satyagraha" in 1989
  • Politburo member of Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist Leninist) in 1990
  • Chairperson, United Left Front in 1989. Led United Left Front along with Nepali Congress into the United Democratic Movement against the party-less Autocratic Panchayat system in order to establish multi-party democratic system.
  • Chairperson, Women Security Pressure Group, 1992
  • Chairperson, Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist Leninist), 1997 - 2001
  • Standing Committee member of Communist Party of Nepal, United Marxist and Leninist
