Nepal-North Korea Relations


Political Relations

Background

Nepal and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) enjoy good bilateral relations based on mutual understanding and goodwill. Nepal holds its view that reunification of Korea must be accomplished without any outside interference. Kathmandu and Pyongyang have sister city relations since 2001.

Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic relations between Nepal and North Korea was established in 1969 which was upgraded to Ambassadorial level in 15 May,1974. North Korea opened its Embassy in Kathmandu in 1974 but Nepal has not opened its Embassy yet in Pyongyang. Our Embassy in Beijing is concurrently accredited to Pyongyang also.

Visits

From Nepal:

Late Prime Ministers Tanka P. Acharya and Mr. Kirti Nidhi Bista have paid separate visits to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Bharat Mohan Adhikari visited DPRK in 2007.

From the Korean side:

Vice-President of DPRK Mr. Kang Ryong Uk, representing President Kim Il Sung, visited Nepal during the coronation of King Birendra in 1975.

H.E. Pak In Jun, Vice-Chairman of the Supreme People’s Assembly, H.E. Li Jong Ok, Vice-President and H.E. Hwang Jang-Yop, Chairman of the Committee for Foreign Policy of the Supreme People’s Assembly visited Nepal in 1992, 1993 and 1995 respectively.

Mr. Pak Kil Yon, Vice Foreign Minister of the DPRK visited Nepal on May 1-4, 2000.

Mechanisms

Foreign Ministry level bilateral mechanism has been established since 2001, and the 3rd Meeting was held in Kathmandu in 2008.

Economic Cooperation

Some construction materials, newsprint and consumer goods were provided by the DPRK in the past, including 15 tractors and some scholarships in sericulture and other disciplines.

From Nepal side, an ophthalmic team from Tilganga Eye Hospital of Kathmandu conducted an eye camp in North Korea in 2005 and 2006.

Trade

Exports from Nepal to DPRK amount almost null while the imports from DPRK amount Rs. 20,156,669 for the fiscal year 2009/10. (Nepal Foreign Trade Statistics, 2009/10, Vol. II)

Foreign Direct Investment

North Korea has invested Rs.32.55 million in three different industries which generate 147 job opportunities in Nepal ( Department of Industry, 2010/11)
