Nepal-Mangolia Relations


Political Relations

Background

Nepal-Mongolia relations are founded on the basis of mutual friendship, trust and goodwill. Both countries have shared commonalities in Buddhism, LDC, and Landlocked countries.

Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic Relations between Nepal and Mongolia was established on 05 January 1961. Nepalese Ambassador in Beijing is concurrently accredited to Mongolia. Mongolian Ambassador in New Delhi is concurrently accredited to Nepal. Mongolia has opened one Honorary Consulate in Kathmandu from where the consular matters have been carried out.

Bilateral Visits:

From Nepal

Late King Mahendra had paid a State Visit to Mongolia in 1961.

Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Adhikari visited Mongolia in March 1995.

From Mongolia

Mongolian President Mr. Natsagiin Bagabandi paid a State Visit to Nepal from 5-7 January 2001.

Chairman of the Great People's Hural of Mongolia Mr. Bat-Ochircin Altangerel visited Nepal in April 1987.

Mongolian Foreign Minister Mr. Dugarsuren visited Nepal in April 1978.

Trade and Economic Relations:

Nepal's economic relations with Mongolia are limited. However, there is great possibility of promoting bilateral co-operation in wool processing, handicrafts, livestock, highland pasturing and horse breeding. For the fiscal year 2009/10, Nepal’s exports to Mongolia stand at Rs. 1,134,252 and the imports was Rs. 3,524,921. (Foreign Trade Statistics, 2009/10, GON)

Major Agreements

A Framework Agreement on Bilateral Co-operation was signed between Nepal and Mongolia in 2001 during the visit to Nepal of the Mongolian President Mr. Natsagiin Bagabandi. Nepal and Mongolia also signed a Bilateral Trade Agreement in 1992 on the basis of Most Favored Nation (MFN) treatment to each other.

Similarly, a Cultural Agreement was signed between the two countries in 1995, during the visit of the then Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Adhikari to Mongolia.
