Nepal-Indonesia Relations


Political Relation

Background
Both Nepal and Indonesia are founding member of NAM movement. Nepal was a participant in Bandung Conference of 1955 which paved the way for formation of NAM Movement. Long-standing relations between Nepal and Indonesia date back to the time of the Afro-Asian Conference in Bandung in 1955, where the principles of Panchasheel were adopted.

Diplomatic Relations
Diplomatic Relations between Nepal and Indonesia was established on 25 December 1960. Indonesia had opened its Embassy in Kathmandu in 1965, which was, however, closed in 1967 citing their adherence to austerity measures. In April, 2010 Indonesia opened its consulate in Kathmandu.

Bilateral Visits

From Nepal
Late Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala visited Indonesia in 1992 to attend the 10th NAM summit.

Late King Birendra (as Crown Prince) and Late King Mahindra visited Indonesia in 1964 and 1971 respectively.

The then King Gyanendra and Queen Komal visited Indonesia on April 20-23, 2005 to attend the Asian-African Summit in Jakarta.

From Indonesia

Indonesian Foreign Ministers visited Nepal in 1970, 1975 and 1981.

Economic Relation

Trade Relations

For the fiscal year 2009/10, Nepal’s exports to Indonesia stand at Rs. 2,837,402 and the imports was Rs. 8,093,843,045. (Foreign Trade Statistics, 2009/10, GON)

Tourism

In April 1997, a joint expedition team of Indonesia and British mountaineers scaled Mt. Everest and this event boosted the Nepalese tourism promotion in Indonesia. The number of Indonesian tourists visiting Nepal in 2004 and 2005 stood at 668 and 687 respectively. However, after four years, in 2009, the figure remains 729 only.
