Nepal-Luxembourg Relations
The diplomatic relations between Nepal and Luxembourg were established on November 27, 1975. Since then the relations between our two countries have been cordial and friendly. Royal Nepalese Ambassador to Belgium is concurrently accredited to Luxembourg. Similarly, Ambassador of Luxembourg resident in New Delhi is also accredited to the Kingdom of Nepal.
Though, both countries have not signed any bilateral development cooperation agreement Nepal has been assisted in health, environment and education sectors through the international non-governmental organizations.
Exchange of visits, though modest at present, has contributed to strengthening relations between Nepal and Luxembourg.
Minister for Education of Luxembourg visited Nepal in March 1993.
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg paid a private visit to Nepal from April 16 to 19, 1998. His late Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev inaugurated the hospital for the disabled constructed with the assistance of Luxembourg at Banepa during the visit. Under an agreement signed between Government of Nepal and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in July 1997, equipment worth LUF 22,000,000 was provided for the Hospital and Rehabilitation Center for Disabled children in Banepa. The assistance has already been utilised.
HRH prince Guillaume, the eldest son of HRH Crown Prince Henri of Luxembourg, paid a private visit to Nepal from 6 to 28 August 1997. HRH Prince Guillaume was accompanied by 100 scouts of Luxembourg on his visit to Nepal.
In June 1997, a Nepalese trade and business delegation led by the President of the Nepal-Benelux Chamber of Commerce and Industries paid a visit to Luxembourg. During the visit, the Nepalese delegation had the opportunity to have audience with HRH Crown Prince Henri of Luxembourg. The delegation explored the possibility of establishing trade and banking relations with Luxembourg during their stay.
Trade and Tourism:
The volume of bilateral trade between Nepal and Luxembourg is small in volume and value compared to other EU countries. Nepalese export to Luxemburg has dominated by the traditional items like carpet, handicraft items and leather. There is sudden increase in import from Luxemburg in the year 2003/2004. A record of trade deficit of 23,692,910 NPR is accounted in the year 2003/2004. The statistics of trade between Nepal and Luxemburg is as follows.
