Nepal-Hungary Relations
Political
Diplomatic relations between Nepal and Hungary were established on 15 January
1961. The Embassy of Nepal in Germany is concurrently accredited to Hungary and
residential Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi is concurrently accredited to Nepal.
Hungary has opened its Honorary Consulate in Kathmandu. The relations between
the two countries have always been marked by goodwill, trust and mutual respect.
These relations have been further strengthened by occasional exchange of visits
and contacts at various levels in the past.
Exchange of Visits
His Majesty late King Mahendra paid an unofficial visit to Hungary in 1967. His Majesty late King Birendra, then Crown Prince, visited Hungary in 1968. These visits helped to develop better understanding between the two countries. Since then no major visits have taken place between the two countries in recent years.
Economic Cooperation
In the fiscal year 2001/02, Nepal exported goods worth Rs. 3.12 million to Hungary and imported commodities worth Rs. 4.26 million. While major items of the Nepalese export constituted handbags, handmade papers and paperboard, carpets and garments, Nepal imported photographic films, yarn, electrical and telecommunication apparatus, filament lamps and mercury or sodium vapour lamp. Thus, with Hungary, we have a negative trade balance of Rs. 1.14 million. However, with the accession of Hungary to the European Union on 1 May 2004 along with 9 European countries, the prospects of cooperative relations between Nepal and the EU is expected to receive added impetus through excellent economic and trade relations with Hungary.
Education
Hungary has provided some scholarships to Nepal in the fields of medicine, international law and humanities. In 1982, a Hungarian cultural team had visited Nepal to screen film and exhibit posters. In 1985, one Hungarian expedition team visited Nepal for mountaineering purpose.
Tourism
The following figures show the tourist arrivals from Hungary in recent years, which is, however, quite low in comparison to other European countries.
