Nepal-Czech Republic Relations

Political Relations
Nepal established diplomatic relations with the Czech Republic on the 2nd of March 1994. The Ambassador of Nepal to Germany is concurrently accredited to the Czech Republic and the Czech Republic's Ambassador to India is concurrently accredited to Nepal.

Visits
The Czech Deputy Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Hynek Kmonicek visited Nepal from 27 to 28 June 2001. Mr. Kmonicek called on the then Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Chakra Prasad Bastola and also had talks with the Secretary of the Ministry. A Nepalese delegation led by Chief Commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of the Abuse of Authority Mr Surya Nath Upadhyaya attended the 10th International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) held on 7-11 October 2001 in Prague, Czech Republic.

Scholarships
Former Czechoslovakia had provided some scholarships to Nepalese students especially in the fields of engineering, medicine and other technical subjects. Now, the Czech Republic, a successor state of former Czechoslovakia has been offering some scholarships to Nepalese students every year for higher studies in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Economics and Czech language.

Development Assistance
Development projects undertaken in Nepal under the economic and technical assistance from the then Soviet Union like the Janakpur Cigarette Factory and Agricultural Tools Factory were supplied with Czech equipment.

Bilateral Agreements
Nepal and the former Czechoslovak Socialist Republic had signed an Agreement on Cooperation in the field of Public Health and Medical Sciences on 1 March 1979 and on Trade and Payment on 12 December 1982.

Business Delegations
A Nepalese trade delegation visited the Czech Republic in 1988 and discussed with the officials of the Czech Chambers of Commerce and Industry. A 15-member Czech trade mission headed by Mr. Petr Kulovany, Director of Asia Department of Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic visited Nepal in March 1999. During the visit, they held interactions with the Nepalese businessmen at Nepal Chamber of Commerce with an objective of promoting trade between the two countries. They had shown their keen interest to invest in joint ventures in Nepal in the areas of water resources, roads, food industry, building construction and industrial equipment.

Tourism
Czech people are known as mountain lovers and they are avid pursuers of highland trekking as well as mountaineering. A number of the Czech tourists visit Nepal every year.

Trade
The volume of trade between Nepal and the Czech Republic shows an increasing trend but is in favour of the Czech Republic. Nepal exports mainly readymade garments, handicrafts, hand-knotted woolen carpets, tea and medicinal herbs to the Czech Republic. Imports from the Czech Republic mainly constitute medicine and medical equipment, electrical goods, machinery and parts, glass beads, bulldozer, crane and parts and foodstuffs.
