Nepal-Cuba Relations

Political
The bilateral relations between Nepal and the Republic of Cuba have been friendly and cordial ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations on 25 March 1975. The Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations is currently accredited to Cuba. Similarly the Cuban Ambassador to India is accredited to Nepal.

Contacts between the two countries primarily take place in the international fora such as in the United Nations and the NAM. Both countries believe that the UN should be strengthened and play an increasingly active role in the post Cold War era in maintaining peace and stability in the world. As the active members of the NAM, both countries have been advocating the just causes of the developing countries.

Exchange of Visits
The friendly relations between the two countries have been further strengthened by exchange of visits and contacts at various levels in the past.

Their Late Majesties King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya paid an official visit to Havana, the capital city of Cuba, in September 1979 to represent Nepal in the VI summit of the Non-alignment Movement. The then Prime Minister Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala met President Fidel Castro of Cuba during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Earth Summit) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 1992 and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest. Then Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Chakra Prasad Bastola paid a visit to Cuba leading a Nepalese delegation to the South Summit held in Havana from 10 to 14 April 2000.

His Excellency Mr. Roberto Robaina Gonzalez, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba paid an official visit to Nepal from 2 to 5 February 1995. Mr. Alberto Velazco San Jose, Ambassador of Cuba, visited Kathmandu as a special envoy of the Cuban Government from January 25 to 27, 2000. Cuban Deputy Minister of External Affairs Mr. Manuel Aguilera visited Nepal from 20 to 23 March 2004 to deliver a letter from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba H. E. Felipe Perez Roque seeking support for Cuba on issues likely to be raised at the UN Commission on Human Rights session in Geneva in 2004, especially on the US resolution on human rights situation in Cuba, and hold discussions on other bilateral issues between Nepal and Cuba.

Education
Cuba has been providing scholarships to Nepal annually in different fields including medicine and engineering for last several decades. Cuba has made good progress in the field of medicine. Owing to the high level Cuban expertise in the field of medicine, there is a possibility of enhancing cooperation in this field.
